The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is one of the oldest continuous student programs having run for 91 years, but innovation is still in their vocabulary.  The Awards that encourages creativity in art, film, writing, photography, poetry, sculpture and other endeavors by young people has partnered with 3D Printer manufacturer 3D Systems in a challenge at the intersection of new technology and the creative arts.

The Winner Gets a Sense 3D Scanner from 3D Systems

Students in grades 7 to 12 are invited to create designs that like other challenges allow them to show they are makers of things, but according to the 3D Systems invitation, entrants are also encouraged to “transform conventional forms of art and writing, inspire change in their communities and celebrate their originality.”  The winning entry will win a Sense 3D Scanner, and all entrants get to try Cubify design software for free.  Of course, it can be designed on any platform, but I do like the Cubify software and find it intuitive to use.  Entries are due August 1, 2014.

Be sure to let the young people in your life know they can get details here.  The winner will join a long lineage of exceptional writers and artists including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Stephen King, and Ken Burns.
